Obuoffia Political Attack: The Crime Of Recording The Truth - And The Fate Of Sunday Ani …. _who Is

Afraid of Ani Samuel Sunday’s Camera?

When political thuggery descends upon peaceful assemblies, it is a crime against democracy. But when the state mobilizes its machinery to hunt, silence, and incarcerate the citizen who dared to document that violence, it becomes an act of unchecked state terror.

Recently, in a well publicised press statement, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Enugu State Chapter, raises an urgent global alarm over the direct threat to the life, liberty, and fundamental human rights of Sunday Ani, a courageous citizen whose only crime was serving as an eyewitness and recording the violent, blood-drenched assault on an NDC Ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area.

Ani Samuel Sunday did not manufacture the violence at Obuoffia. He did not fire a weapon. He did not organise an armed mob. His alleged “offence” was that he was there, he recorded what was happening, and he identified an individuals by the alias he knew them to bear, he didn't even mentioned theirs real names.

That is precisely why his subsequent ordeal demands urgent public attention. Ani Samuel Sunday was the person who recorded on spot political attack on NDC Ward Meeting at Obuoffia, after recording and sharing footage of the Obuoffia attack, he was pursued by individuals suspected of attempting to assassinate him. Having escaped what he believed was an attempt on his life, he was subsequently arrested and detained over allegations that he made false accusations to share the video.

Given this undisputed reality, Nigeria and the global community must now confront a stark and inescapable truth:

Has the witness become the target because the camera captured too much?

A democratic government should protect the citizen who documents a crime, preserve his evidence, guarantee his safety, and investigate his testimony objectively. It should not create an atmosphere in which a witness fears that surviving an alleged assassination attempt may be followed by arrest.

We therefore call upon the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, judiciary, National Human Rights Commission, legal practitioners, civil-society organisations, diplomatic missions, international human-rights institutions and all people of conscience to take an independent interest in the safety, detention, treatment and legal status of Ani Samuel Sunday.

Let the evidence speak. Let the video be examined. Let the identities and aliases mentioned in the footage be independently investigated.

Let the alleged attack on Sunday himself be investigated with the same seriousness.

And if anyone believes his allegations are false, let that question be determined through a transparent, lawful and impartial judicial process, not through violent intimidation, political coercion, or the arbitrary incarceration of a whistleblower. As of today, Ani Sunday Samuel remains illegally detained by the Enugu State Police Command.

The world must understand what is at stake in Enugu State.

A camera cannot be arrested for telling the truth. A witness cannot become the accused merely because his evidence is inconvenient.

The bloodshed at Obuoffia deserves justice. Its victims deserve justice. And Ani Samuel Sunday deserves protection, not persecution while the truth is established. Ani Samuel Sunday cannot be incarcerated while the perpetrators of the crime work freely.

If there is nothing to hide, let the evidence speak.

A New Enugu State and Better Nigeria is coming.
