Suspension, Silence And The Politics Of Fear: What Is Really Happening To Enugu’s Traditional Institution?


The thin, fragile veil of administrative propriety covering the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Mbah has finally ripped completely apart, exposing a ruthless reign of political intolerance and draconian intimidation. The recent suspension of His Royal Highness, Igwe Eze William Ezugwu (Eze Ka Eze of Ibagwa-Opi Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area), signed by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles O. C. Egumgbe, is nothing short of a brazen, political hit job thinly disguised as law enforcement.

The government can throw around all the bureaucratic excuses it wants, citing "high-handedness," failure to establish a cabinet, or lack of town union governance, familiar frivolous and vexatious excuses on the stable of dictatorial governors struggling for the last straw in the face of impending electoral defeat, however, the citizens of Enugu State see right through this transparent charade. The timing of this official hammer is far too deliberate to be a mere coincidence. Igwe Ezugwu’s true "offense" was never about violating Cap 151 of the Traditional Rulers Law. His actual, unforgiveable "crime" in the eyes of the ruling power was opening the revered gates of his palace to host opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, just two weeks prior.


The question Enugu people are asking is, if not, why did this suspension come shortly after the traditional ruler received Peter Obi and other opposition figures at his palace? In Governor Mbah’s Enugu, basic Igbo hospitality extended to opposition leaders is now treated as treason against the state.



This malicious targeting of the Igwe of Ibagwa-Opi is merely the opening salvo in a much broader, sinister campaign of institutional intimidation, similar to harrassment of opposition party meetings. Reliable information reaching us reveals that no fewer than 38 traditional rulers across Enugu State have already been penciled down for similar suspension, harassment, or dethronement. Their collective sin? Refusing to sing low-quality praises to the current administration, refusing to shut their palace doors against worthy sons and daughters of this nation seen as political rivals by the APC government, or simply daring to exchange pleasantries with opposition members in public space.


The message emanating from the Lion Building is chillingly explicit: total political submission or absolute destruction. The administration appears fiercely determined to enforce a single-party hegemony across the state, effectively signaling that every traditional ruler, community leader, and ordinary citizen must fall in line or face state-sponsored victimisation.


If this level of tyrannical overreach, political witch-hunting, and systematic destruction of traditional royal institutions is taking place right now, Ndi Enugu must wake up to the grave danger ahead. Should Governor Peter Mbah secure another term come 2027, the good people of Enugu State will be forced to live with a brutal iron rule where fundamental freedom of association and political expression are completely eradicated. Today, it is the traditional custodians of our heritage being stripped of their crowns; tomorrow, it will be everyday citizens being stripped of their basic human rights. The government must immediately reverse this shameful suspension and stop weaponizing state power against traditional institutions. 


​This alarming trend of political persecution is precisely why the people of Enugu State must mobilize, rise up, and do everything legally within their power to ensure the election of Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa as Governor come 2027. Enugu needs a seasoned, compassionate administrator who respects democratic values, human dignity, and the sanctity of our traditional institutions. 


The emergence of Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will break these heavy chains of political oppression, restore the lost glory and pride of the Coal City State, and liberate Ndi Enugu from this suffocating governance. By choosing tested leadership anchored on public accountability and respect for all citizens, Enugu can finally break free from totalitarian politics and firmly set itself on an unstoppable path of genuine progress, economic advancement, and true democratic freedoms
