Ohaa Visits ESUT Teaching Hospital Over Ugwu Onyeama Accident Victims, Demands Emergency Action on Enugu Health Sector




ENUGU, ENUGU STATE — September 6, 2026: The NDC Governorship Candidate for Enugu State, Sir Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa (Odalije), today visited the ESUT Teaching Hospital to ascertain the condition of victims of the recent Ugwu Onyeama–9th Mile road accident that occurred on Friday 4th September, only to discover that the victims were not receiving treatment at the facility as expected.



During the visit, Ohaa was informed that the affected accident victims had been taken to different private hospitals because doctors at the teaching hospital were on strike since 28th day of August due to loss of accreditation to various departments, Poor facilities at the call duty rooms, Poor feeding of residents who are on call, Lack of electricity at the accident and emergency at colliery hospital which resulted to working with rechargeable lantern and etc


The development, he said, was deeply troubling and underscored the urgent need for decisive intervention in the state’s healthcare system.


Addressing journalists after the visit, Ohaa expressed concern that residents and accident victims should not be left vulnerable because of unresolved disputes between government and medical professionals.

Ohaa called on the Enugu State Government to urgently reconcile with the striking doctors, resolve outstanding issues through meaningful dialogue, and ensure that public hospitals are fully functional.


He further called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector, arguing that the situation requires immediate, coordinated and people-centred action rather than political maneuvering.


The NDC candidate urged the government of the day to stop playing politics with matters concerning the lives and wellbeing of Ndi Enugu.


He said his administration, if elected in 2027, would prioritise a healthcare system that is accessible, properly equipped, adequately staffed and responsive to emergencies.


According to him, government has a fundamental responsibility to protect lives, especially during medical emergencies and disasters.


Ohaa reiterated his commitment to building a people-oriented healthcare system where patients receive timely treatment, medical workers are motivated, and public hospitals are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.


He appealed to Ndi Enugu to remain vigilant and demand accountability from those entrusted with the responsibility of managing the state's healthcare system.
