Desperation in Enugu: How Fear of Non-Endorsement Drove Security Interference in Udi North

 In what can only be described as a display of political paranoia, operatives directed by the ruling political establishment recently deployed security personnel to abort a non-partisan community gathering of the Udi North Constituency Conference.

The conference, convened by Chief Adonis Igwe alongside community leaders like Dr. Walter Oji, brought together stakeholders across all nine wards to address long-standing underdevelopment and security challenges. Yet, terrified by the conference's deliberate refusal to issue politically motivated endorsements, elements within the ruling party deployed state instruments to force the meeting off.

Reactions have swift. Speaking on the arbitrary stoppage, Chief Adonis minced no words in condemning the act, describing it as an antiquated attempt to muzzle citizen civic engagement. 

"My concern is that Udi North must be allowed to organize themselves... This was not even a political meeting. Let us call it a family meeting, the entire community of Udi North, all nine wards came around. No placard, no intention of any protest and one wonders how family gathering will be tagged security risk," Chief Igwe stated.

 "Nobody should force us to endorse anyone. Nobody should force anybody to belong where he does not want to belong... My message to those who think they can intimidate or suppress the people's voices is this: It is not possible. They cannot do it. We have outgrown that kind of politics. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of association," he added.

This heavy-handed suppression of a non-aligned civic assembly follows a trend of political intolerance sweeping across Enugu State. Just days ago, similar disruptions were unleashed upon opposition gatherings, including an attack on an NDC ward meeting in Obuoffia and the destruction of venue facilities at a PDP rally in Agbani.

It remains ironic that while insecurity and economic stagnancy plague grassroots communities across Udi North, the state apparatus finds its most urgent priority in shutting down peaceful consultative assemblies. Instead of demonstrating governance through developmental strides, the political establishment seems committed to coercing validation through forced silence.

As Chief Igwe noted, these high-handed actions offer no real solution to the challenges the people are facing in the state. 

"I thank God that what they did has shown that there is no interest of government in the development of Udi North. How can government come and stop us from holding a constituency meeting for the development of our own land? Since they are not talking about our development, we are taking our destiny into our own hands... We will not be deterred."

If the ruling elites believe that dispersing chairs and sending armed squads can stifle community enterprise, they severely miscalculate the political maturity of the electorate. Repression has never successfully replaced performance.
