WORKERS’ DAY 2026: A TRIBUTE TO RESILIENCE & A CALL TO HOPE

Today, May 1st, we join millions across the nation and the world to commemorate Workers’ Day, a moment not only of celebration, but of deep reflection on the dignity of labour, the sacrifices of our workforce, and the future we must collectively build.
As a Labour leader, I extend my warmest greetings and heartfelt solidarity to Nigerian workers, and most especially to the resilient men and women of Enugu State, whose daily toil sustains our economy, strengthens our communities, and keeps hope alive even in the most trying times.
This year’s commemoration comes at a period of undeniable turbulence in our national life. Across the country workers are grappling with economic hardship, rising costs of living, job insecurity, and the widening gap between effort and reward. In Enugu State, as in many parts of Nigeria, the realities of unemployment, underemployment, delayed opportunities, and systemic inefficiencies continue to test the patience and endurance of our people.
Yet, in the face of these challenges, Nigerian workers have not surrendered. You rise each day with courage. You persevere where others might give up. You remain the quiet backbone of a nation still striving to find its balance.
Let me say this clearly: the strength and future of Nigeria lies not in its rhetoric, but in the resilience of its workers.
The current political climate, marked by shifting alliances, institutional uncertainties, and renewed struggles for democratic integrity, has only underscored one truth - our nation stands at a crossroads. The decisions we make now, the leadership we choose, and the values we defend will shape not just the next election cycle, but the destiny of generations to come.
In times like these, it is easy to grow weary. It is easy to lose faith in systems that have, too often, failed to reward hard work with fairness and dignity. But history teaches us that transformation is never born out of despair, it is forged through persistence, courage, and collective resolve.
To the workers of Enugu State, I urge you: remain resilient. Remain hopeful. Remain engaged.
Your voice matters. Your labour matters. Your future matters.
As we look ahead, I reaffirm my commitment to a vision of governance that places regular citizens and workers at the center of development, where policies are not mere promises, but instruments of real change; where employment is not a privilege for the few, but a right supported by mediocrity, innovation, enterprise, and inclusive growth; where the dignity of labour is protected, rewarded, and celebrated.
Together, we can build an Enugu State where hard work leads to real opportunity, where young people are empowered to thrive, and where every worker can look to the future with confidence rather than uncertainty.
On this Workers’ Day, let us not only celebrate how far we have come, but renew our determination to go further.
The road may be rough, but the spirit of the Nigerian worker remains unbreakable.
Happy Workers’ Day, my comrades in the struggle for emancipation of all.
