MOTHER’S DAY COVENANT OF HOPE: A Message to the Resilient Women of Enugu State from Engr. Dr. Chris Okonkwo

... To the Pillars of our Homes and the Soul of our State

On this sacred Sunday, April 19, 2026, as the Catholic faithful and the entire nation pause to honor the incomparable essence of motherhood, I reach out to you not just as an aspirant, but as a son who understands the weight of the crown you wear.

Motherhood is often described as a journey of love, but in our beloved Enugu State today, that journey has been fraught with unmerited struggle. I see you. I see the quiet strength you exert when the taps run dry and the search for water becomes a daily battle for survival. I feel the anxiety that grips your hearts as skyrocketing rents threaten the sanctity of your homes and the stability of your families.

Most painfully, I am aware of the silent cries in our healthcare centers the difficulties you face in accessing quality maternal and reproductive care, and the sense of abandonment when a government that is supposed to protect your interests looks the other way. It often seems as though no one cares .But I tell you today: I care. Engr. Dr. Chris Okonkwo hears you.

This Mother’s Day is not merely a day for platitudes; it is a day for a solemn resolve. My vision for Enugu State is rooted in the belief that when a mother is empowered, a nation is healed. Under my leadership, the welfare of our women and the future of our youth will not just be agenda items-they will be our top priorities.

We are moving toward an Enugu where water scarcity becomes history through sustainable engineering, ensuring no mother spends her day searching for a basic necessity. We are committed to an era where economic relief is tangible, addressing the housing crisis and skyrocketing rents that make basic living an agonizing burden.

Furthermore, we will ensure that healthcare is a right rather than a luxury, overhauling our primary systems so every woman receives dignified and comprehensive medical attention, particularly regarding reproductive health. The hardships you endure today are deep, but they are not permanent.

To every Catholic mother celebrating today and to every woman across our state: relief is coming. We are stepping into a season where the government will finally act as your shield and your partner.

As you gather in your parishes and homes to celebrate this Mothering Sunday, may your hearts be filled with the peace you so richly deserve. Your labor shall not be in vain, and your sacrifices will be honored with a state that works for you.

Happy Mothering Sunday to the gallant women of Enugu State.

With commitment,

Engr. Dr. Chris Okonkwo
