SOS from AMANKANU - ODUMA AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY: An Open Letter to Gov. Mbah

We, the CONCERNS CITIZENS OF ANINRI, humbly bring to your attention a pressing matter that threatens the very fabric of our community's tradition and governance structure. The Local Government Chairman of Aninri, Hon. Ugochukwu Nwanjoku, is recklessly attempting to subvert a gazetted constitution of the Amankanu Autonomous community in Oduma,  and impose a traditional ruler in the community, disregarding the wishes of the people.

This brazen attempt to hijack our tradition and constitution is an affront to our heritage and a clear breach of the principles of good governance and democracy that your administration has consistently upheld. The Chairman's actions are capable of igniting tension and crises in the local government, detrimental to the peace and stability that your administration has worked tirelessly to maintain.

The Constitutional Framework

Our community's constitution, gazetted in 2017/18, outlines a rotational leadership structure between Group A and Group B. The constitution clearly states that the kingship rotates according to seniority, with Umuoro being the eldest kindred in Group A. When Umuoro couldn't produce a king within the stipulated timeframe, the right was transferred to Uhuogwudu, the second in line of seniority in Group A, in accordance with the constitution.

The Chairman's Plan

The Local Government Chairman, in a display of arrogance, has boasted about his ability to "make and unmake" and has appointed a caretaker PG on his own with no regard to the ministry of local government and Chieftaincy matters to perfect his plan. Despite Umuoro's clear stance that they cannot take the Offor back from Uhuogwudu, the Chairman is determined to recruit a few Umuoro individuals to ensure the staff is returned, solely due to his hatred for Uhuogwudu and his quest to crown his inlaw the traditional ruler of Amankanu.

Our Plea to Your Excellency

We humbly implore you to intervene in this matter and ensure that our constitution stands. We request that you:

1. Uphold the Constitution: Ensure that the election of the traditional ruler follows the gazetted constitution.

2. Protect Our Tradition: Prevent the Local Government Chairman from imposing an unpopular candidate as the traditional ruler in Amankanu and Aninri as a whole.

3. Maintain Peace and Stability: Take necessary steps to prevent the Chairman's actions from igniting tension and crises in our communities in Aninri.

Investigation and Action

We also bring to your attention that the Chairman is bent on thwarting the constitution to ensure his in-law is made the traditional ruler of Amankanu Autonomous community. It is imperative that the Chairman's activities in interfering with traditional installations be investigated. His boasts of installing traditional rulers to influence election should the governor fail to return him. This is very alarming and should not be allowed to ignite fire in Aninri.

We count on your leadership and commitment to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law to protect our tradition and ensure that the will of the people stands.

We eagerly await your prompt intervention in a matter that affects the very fabric of our community's tradition and governance structure. We are confident that under your leadership, justice and fairness will prevail, and our community will continue to thrive in peace and stability.

Sincerely,

Rotr. Chidi Orji
