Justice for Hon. Bright Ngene: NBA's Timely Intervention Brings Hope

In light of the recent developments regarding the case of Honorable Bright Ngene, the declared winner of the Enugu South State Assembly election under the Labour Party, it is a moment of renewed hope for democracy and the rule of law.

The recent intervention of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in this matter is a commendable and timely act. It demonstrates that the legal profession in Nigeria and indeed the Nigerian Bar Association under the leadership of Mazi Afam Osigwe is committed to its role as the guardian of justice and a defender of fundamental human rights. In collaboration with Hon Bright Ngene’s lawyers, I understand that steps are being taken to approach the registrar of  the new court assigned the matter  to obtain date and begin the judicial process for determination of Mr Bright’s Appeal. With this, the NBA has shown its concern for a fair and expedited legal process and I must thank the leadership of the NBA for this bold and necessary step, and also for breaking the news that the matter has been asdigned to a court for adjudication.

We implore the court to consider the pleas for a speedy and impartial review of the case for a possible release of Honorable Ngene.

This would not only be a triumph for justice but also a reaffirmation of the judiciary's independence.

To all Labour Party faithfuls, this is a moment to be hopeful. As leaders of the Party we would not rest on our shoulders until we see that Hon Bright Ngene gets justice. Moreso, the recent intervention by the NBA as represented by a delegation that visited him in Enugu  Correctional centre last week are strong indications that the struggle for justice is gaining momentum.

Let us remain steadfast in our belief that the appeal of Honorable Bright Ngene will be favourable so that he will be released soon to represent his constituency in the State Assembly. Let us extend our solidarity in this his trying moments also to his wife and family.
