ENUGU STATE NLC CHAIRMAN SCORES GOVERNOR MBAH HIGH ON WORKERS' WELFARE, INFRASTRUCTURE

The Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Enugu State, Comrade Barrister Fabian Nwigbo, has given the administration of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah an "A" rating for its performance in improving workers' welfare and enhancing productivity across the state.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Medigang Online Newspaper, Comrade Nwigbo said the Mbah administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to the welfare of workers, particularly through the full implementation of the new minimum wage.

According to him, the only outstanding issue is the consequential adjustment and the continued use of the 2019 minimum wage benchmark in calculating domestic servant allowance payable to Deputy Directors and Directors.

"The issue of the minimum wage has been fully implemented, courtesy of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. The only grey area is the issue of consequential adjustment and the use of the old minimum wage figure for domestic servant allowance. We have raised the matter with the government, and they have assured us it will be addressed," he said.

On the issue of pension arrears, the NLC chairman disclosed that when the present administration assumed office, it inherited two months of unpaid pensions owed to state pensioners. He noted that within six months, the government cleared the outstanding arrears.

He, however, acknowledged that some arrears are still owed to local government retirees and retired primary school teachers but expressed confidence that the government is making efforts to offset the outstanding payments as resources become available.

Assessing the overall performance of the administration, Comrade Nwigbo praised the government for its infrastructural development, prompt payment of workers' salaries, regular promotions, and timely payment of pensions to state retirees.

"The major challenge remains the outstanding arrears owed to local government retirees and retired primary school teachers. However, the government is attending to these obligations as funds become available," he said.

He further revealed that Governor Mbah has assured retirees that all outstanding arrears will eventually be settled.

Commending the administration's labour-friendly policies, Nwigbo pointed out that while the Federal Government approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage, the Enugu State Government went further by implementing an ₦80,000 minimum wage for its workers.

"Today, no worker is owed salary arrears or promotion arrears. The government has also performed impressively in growing the state's internally generated revenue (IGR). Based on my overall assessment, I will score the administration an 'A'," he concluded.
